Publications & Editorial Projects

ART Walkway undertakes selected writing, research and editorial projects for museums, biennials, foundations, publishers, galleries, artists’ estates and cultural organisations.

Projects range from institutional publications, field research and editorial dossiers to catalogue essays, monographs and exhibition writing. Each commission is defined by its publication context, research requirements, authorship, editorial responsibility and rights framework.

Commissioned projects are produced for the commissioning organisation’s publication, programme or platform. They remain structurally separate from ART Walkway’s independent reporting, criticism and editorial decisions.

Institutional Publications and Projects

ART Walkway works with biennials, museums, foundations, publishers, universities, public bodies and cultural organisations on projects that require sustained research, critical framing or an independent editorial structure.

This work may include:

• museum, biennial and institutional publications
• research-led essays and field analysis
• thematic readers and editorial dossiers
• multi-author and multi-part publication projects
• editorial concepts and publication architecture
• commissioning frameworks and contributor development
• research, developmental editing and contextual review
• moderated institutional conversations, seminars and public programmes

Institutional projects may address a particular exhibition or programme, or examine the wider conditions surrounding it: authorship, governance, geography, public value, patronage, infrastructure, labour, technology, cultural memory and institutional change.

ART Walkway may undertake the work through its editorial team, appoint an appropriate writer or correspondent, or assemble a defined group of contributors. The structure is determined by the subject, geography, audience and intended life of the publication.

Exhibition and Artist Publications

ART Walkway also undertakes selected writing and editorial projects for galleries, artists’ estates, studios, collections, project spaces and organisations developing exhibition- or artist-focused publications.

This work may include:

• catalogue and monograph essays
• exhibition texts
• contextual and interpretive writing
• commissioned critical essays
• artist interviews and editorial conversations
• research for artist publications
• developmental editing and publication framing
• editorial coordination with writers, curators, designers and publishers

The purpose is not to reproduce promotional language, but to develop writing that can locate an artist, exhibition or body of work within an intellectually credible and durable context.

ART Walkway does not offer paid coverage, favourable reviews, promotional profiles or publication in ART Walkway as part of an institutional commission.

Selected experience

ART Walkway’s editorial practice includes research-led writing, international biennial criticism, on-site correspondence, institutional analysis and long-form cultural publishing across European and international contexts. Relevant examples and contributor recommendations can be provided in relation to a defined enquiry.

How Projects Are Structured

Each project begins with a defined editorial and contractual scope. Depending on the commission, this may establish:

• the purpose and publication context
• the intended audience and format
• the subject, scope and approximate length
• the author, contributors and editorial responsibilities
• research, interview and access requirements
• language, translation and fact-checking requirements
• schedule, review stages and delivery dates
• publication, territory, duration and reuse rights
• fees, expenses and payment terms
• credit, attribution and institutional acknowledgements

A completed brief is not required for an initial enquiry. ART Walkway can help determine the appropriate form where the subject and publication context are already clear but the final scope has not yet been established.

Projects are accepted selectively according to editorial fit, available expertise, schedule, rights conditions and potential conflicts of interest.

Authorship and Editorial Responsibility

Depending on the project, work may be authored by an individual writer, developed by the ART Walkway editorial team, or produced through a defined editorial collaboration.

ART Walkway may recommend a writer, correspondent or research contributor according to the project’s subject, location, intellectual framework and publication requirements. Authorship, editorial responsibility, review stages and credit are agreed before work begins.

Possible credit structures may include individual authorship, editorial development by ART Walkway, or a clearly defined collaborative credit. Commissioning an individual contributor through ART Walkway does not authorise the commissioning organisation to represent that contributor as endorsing the institution, artist or project beyond the agreed work.

Editorial Separation

Institutional commissions are not published as commissioned coverage in ART Walkway.

A commission does not secure, prevent or influence ART Walkway coverage. It does not create access to drafts of unrelated editorial work, favourable treatment, approval rights over reporting or criticism, or control over future commissioning decisions.

Where a commissioning relationship is materially relevant to subsequent coverage, it is reviewed under ART Walkway’s conflict and disclosure standards. ART Walkway may decline a commission where the proposed relationship could reasonably compromise editorial independence, authorship, rights integrity or public trust.
