V&A Museum Criticized for Alleged Racial Profiling of Schoolchildren During Visit
Victoria and Albert Museum in London faces criticism and a boycott petition after accusations of racial profiling schoolchildren from Bristol.
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is under fire following accusations of racial profiling during a school visit by Year 10 students from Bristol’s City Academy on June 11. Claims surfaced that pupils were followed and searched by museum staff, sparking outrage and a petition demanding a boycott.
More than 300 people have signed the petition, calling for a full apology and a shift to an anti-racist framework with mandatory staff training. The petition accuses the museum of offering inconsistent explanations and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
The V&A responded that it is in "close and constructive dialogue" with City Academy and is reviewing the incident and its security procedures. The museum emphasized its commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive space for all visitors.
City Academy leaders confirmed ongoing discussions with the museum and expressed pride in their diverse student opportunities, noting the V&A visit was part of a broader educational program including Hyde Park and the Serpentine Gallery.
As tensions rise, the museum faces pressure to address concerns swiftly or risk losing trust among communities it aims to serve.
