Win $3,000 in the 2025 Toni Beauchamp Prize for Critical Art Writing
Open to essays, reviews, and scholarship exploring the meaning of art today—judged by Natalie Hegert; no fee; deadline: Sept 14, 2025.
Gulf Coast is calling out to the sharpest pens in the visual arts. The 2025 Toni Beauchamp Prize in Critical Art Writing is now open—offering $3,000 to the top writer willing to go beyond surface and style, and get into the guts of what art means today.
No fee. No fluff. Just 1,500 words of critical fire—an essay, a review, a piece of scholarship that demands to be read. If it was published in the past year or never published at all, it’s fair game.
Judged blind by powerhouse critic Natalie Hegert, the prize is built for emerging and mid-career voices—those bridging scholarship and the street, weaving thought with insight, not just reacting, but interpreting.
Two runners-up get $1,000 each. The winner gets published in Gulf Coast Journal. The deadline is September 14, 2025, 11:59 PM CT. The rules are simple: submit one document. Leave your name off it. Make it matter.
Art needs critics who care, not coddle. This is the space for them.
